Sudden Hearing Loss: A Personal Experience and Why Immediate Action Matters

    livingston8

Hearing is something many of us take for granted—until the moment we realize it’s not working as it should. Sudden hearing loss can be a frightening experience, and knowing what to do next is crucial. Today, I want to share an inspiring story from one of our customers, Jackie Bradley, who took the right steps when faced with sudden hearing loss.

Jackie’s Story: Acting Fast Made All the Difference

Jackie experienced sudden hearing loss in her left ear. She did the right thing by visiting her GP first, hoping for an explanation or a quick fix. However, the GP couldn’t see any obvious causes like earwax buildup and, since Jackie had no pain, dizziness, or illness, they didn’t express immediate concern. Instead, the GP advised her to wait for a referral letter for a hearing test.

Luckily, Jackie’s husband urged her not to wait and to see an audiologist immediately. This decision turned out to be critical. At Premium Care Hearing, we assessed her condition and immediately advised her to go to A&E. Why? Because sudden hearing loss is often a medical emergency that requires urgent steroid treatment. If left untreated, the hearing loss could have become permanent.

Jackie took our advice and sought emergency treatment—just in time! She was incredibly grateful for the quick intervention, and we were thrilled to follow up and check on her recovery. In her words:

“Thank goodness I didn’t wait because they said I needed to go to A&E. If I didn’t get it treated with steroids, I’d likely not get hearing back in my left ear… (If it’s not treated early, then it’s lost forever.)”

We are thrilled to say Jackie's hearing is now fully restored and back to normal.

Why You Should Never Ignore Sudden Hearing Loss

Jackie’s experience highlights a crucial fact: sudden hearing loss requires immediate attention. Many people assume it will go away on its own, but the reality is that waiting can cost you your hearing permanently.

    Here are some key takeaways:

    1. Sudden hearing loss is a medical emergency – If you notice sudden hearing loss in one or both ears, don’t wait. Seek help immediately.

    2. General practitioners may not always recognize the urgency – While GPs are an important first step, seeing a hearing specialist quickly can make all the difference.

    3. Early treatment can save your hearing – Steroid treatment, when given in time, can help restore hearing in many cases.

    4. Personalized care makes a difference – As Jackie experienced, at Premium Care Hearing, we follow up with our patients because we truly care about their well-being.

What to Do If You Experience Sudden Hearing Loss

If you or someone you know experiences sudden hearing loss:

    • Do not wait for it to get better on its own.

    • Visit an audiologist immediately for an urgent hearing assessment.

    • If necessary, go to A&E to get steroid treatment as soon as possible.

    • Follow up with a hearing professional to monitor progress.

At Premium Care Hearing, we are committed to helping our patients get the right care at the right time. Jackie’s story is a powerful reminder that trusting your instincts and acting quickly can save your hearing.
